Start with the risk, not the apparent job size.
A small leak or missing shingle can involve a steep edge, brittle covering or damaged decking. Roof access is not made safe by the size of the repair, the cost of a tool or a promise to be careful.
Keep observations on the ground or in safely accessible indoor areas. Record symptoms, weather and prior work; a professional can decide what access and investigation the roof requires.
What about shoes, harnesses and ladders?
Equipment must be selected, installed and used as part of a suitable work and rescue plan by trained people. Footwear and a harness alone are not a complete safety system.
Do not use this guide to set a ladder, choose an anchor or walk around fragile material. A helper at ground level does not remove the hazards of falling, electrical contact or structural failure.
Can a homeowner clean or temporarily cover the roof?
Cleaning, clearing snow, removing moss and installing a tarp can involve hazardous access, slippery surfaces and incompatible products. Have the method assessed for the actual material and conditions.
Do not combine chemicals, pressure-wash a covering without appropriate material guidance or go onto a storm-damaged roof to prevent another leak. Keep people away from hanging snow, branches and debris.
What preparation actually helps?
Have the property location, roof material if known, problem timeline, prior records and safe photos ready. Discuss access, pets, entrances, vehicles and occupied spaces with the contractor.
Ask for a documented assessment and a written scope, including limitations, materials, cleanup and how additional damage is approved. Obtain current licensing and insurance evidence for the contracting entity.
When is the concern urgent?
Leave an area with an immediate structural or electrical danger and contact the appropriate emergency service. Stay clear of unstable ceilings, wet fixtures and downed lines.
